Epilepsy Awareness

There are few experiences that can match the drama brought by a convulsive seizure. A person who experiences such a seizure may react in a number of ways. Some individuals may cry out or simply fall over unconscious. A number twitch uncontrollably while others tend to lose bladder control a few minutes into the seizure. Such a seizure lasts only a short time and most individuals who have never heard of epilepsy have this generalization in mind. However, this describes just one type of epilepsy. Epilepsy awareness entails learning about the different kinds of epilepsy, the common symptoms as well as the possible treatments for the illness.

A simple history of epilepsy shows that the illness was one of the first brain disorders to be discovered. While it was generally believed that epileptic seizures were caused by possession, early studies revealed that the disorder is caused by brain neurons which send signals abnormally. The nerve cells, as such, tend to misfire which cause the epileptic seizures.

There are many possible causes of epilepsy. These may range from illness to brain trauma. At times, abnormal brain development can lead to epileptic seizures. Epilepsy awareness publications indicate that some individuals with the condition have an abnormal number of excitatory neurotransmitters which increase the activity in the neurons. Others, on the other hand, have abnormally low levels of inhibitory neurotransmitters which actually decrease the activity in the brain neurons. Either aspect has been noted to result in too much neuron activity which may lead to epileptic seizures.

There are numerous epilepsy awareness publications on the different kinds of seizures as well as the different kinds of epilepsy. Some of the common epilepsy disorders include absence epilepsy and temporal lobe epilepsy. Individuals who suffer absence epilepsy have repeated lapses in consciousness while those who suffer from temporal lobe epilepsy have focal seizures which are commonly associated with auras.

Part of epilepsy awareness involves disproving common beliefs regarding the illness. A number of individuals who are not fully aware of what epilepsy is tend to have certain misconceptions regarding the illness. For instance, there are some people who believe that epilepsy is contagious and can be caused by mental retardation. It should be noted that epilepsy is not contagious and one cannot get the illness by interacting with other individuals who have epilepsy. Moreover, just by having epileptic seizures does not necessarily mean that the person will be mentally impaired nor does it mean that they are mentally impaired.

While epilepsy is a serious condition, there are a number of ways through which it can be prevented. Moreover, individuals who have epilepsy have a number of treatment options which they can use to gain control of their condition. Prescription medication is the most effective treatment for individuals suffering from epilepsy.
